    Bottom Line

Total Auto Protect offers three plans to protect vehicles no longer under the manufacturer's warranty. Plans include a price-match guarantee, money-back guarantee, roadside assistance and direct payment to the repair facility.

    What is Total Auto Protect?

Total Auto Protect is an extended auto warranty company. The company has more than 40 years of experience in the vehicle service contract industry. When you choose one of Total Auto Protect’s plans, you work directly with the company — you don’t have to deal with third parties during the claims process.

Perks included in a Total Auto Protect plan along with the parts and labor coverage are roadside assistance, locksmith coverage, trip interruption coverage and rental car service. Total Auto Protect is available nationwide, and it allows you to choose your own mechanic or dealership for service.

How does Total Auto Protect work?

You can get started with Total Auto Protect by getting a free quote for your vehicle (as long as it has fewer than 150,000 miles). There are several ways to get a quote: You can fill out a form online with the year, make and model of your car; the mileage; your name and contact information; and your ZIP code. Total Auto Protect then sends you an email with a quote. Alternatively, you can call Total Auto Protect and get a quote directly.

Total Auto Protect may offer you the choice of several plans, depending on your vehicle. Most plans include a deductible. When you have a breakdown in your car, follow these steps:

    1. Call or email Total Auto Protect to start the claim.
    2. Take your vehicle to any mechanic or dealership to get it fixed.
    3. You pay your deductible, and Total Auto Protect pays the balance directly to the shop.

    Total Auto Protect plans

Total Auto Protect offers extended auto warranties to protect you from paying for expensive repairs after the manufacturer’s warranty expires. The company has three plans: Total Plus, Total Convenience and Total Premier.

    Total Plus
    Total Plus covers:
    • Brakes
    • Cooling system
    • Drive axle(s)
    • Electrical system
    • Engine
    • Transmission
    Total Convenience
Total Convenience covers everything from the Total Plus plan, as well as:
    • All-wheel-drive/four-wheel-drive system
    • Steering
    Total Premier
Total Premier is the most comprehensive plan, covering everything in Total Convenience, plus:
    • Air conditioning
    • Anti-lock brakes
    • Front suspension
    • Fuel system
    • Heating
    • High-tech electronics
    • Rear suspension
    • Turbo/supercharger

All three plans come with 24-hour roadside assistance, locksmith service, out-of-gas service, trip interruption service and rental car service.

    Total Auto Protect costs

Total Auto Protect costs are specific to the driver, the vehicle, the plan and the deductible. To find out how much a vehicle service contract with Total Auto Protect costs, you can request a free quote online or over the phone.

Keep in mind that Total Auto Protect has a price-match guarantee. Also, each plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so if you purchase one and decide it’s not right for you within 30 days, you get a full refund. If you cancel after 30 days, you get a prorated refund. Total Auto Protect allows you to transfer a contract to a new owner if you sell your vehicle.

    Reviewed Oct. 27, 2023

On and around July 3, 2023 I purchased an extended warranty for my 2016 BMW seven series with this company called Total Auto Protect. I Jason ** from TAP gave me the song and pony show about how great their coverage is and how it would protect my car. He then went on to say they basically mirror the BMW bumper-to-bumper warranty. This guy will tell you anything to get a sale so he can make his commission. So I purchased their three-year 30,000 mile warranty for $5000 contract number ** from Jason **. And I gave Mr. ** via email all the documentation required and pictures of my car, pictures of the dashboard, etc. etc.

In and around September 21, I had a warning notification pop up about my chassis. I called and made an appointment with Peterson BMW in Boise. This is a very reputable and outstanding BMW dealership. My car was taken in and seen by Peterson BMW on 9-25-2023. They diagnosed the car with several problems with the chassi. There was also some suspension and some other issues.

I called TAP to report a claim on 9-27-2023, filled out all the proper paperwork, sent the report from BMW to them, and waited. Several days pass by with no email or phone notification from TAP so I reached out to them. They informed me there were some paperwork that wasn’t done. Come to find out they had it in their file and didn’t upload it.

So now the claim continued. At this time TAP said they were going to review the claim and send out an inspector to view the car. I waited 4 days and heard nothing from TAP nor had BMW heard anything from TAP. Once again, I called TAP to find out what the status of my claim was and at that time they told me it was denied. I asked him the reason for the denial, especially when they never talk to BMW and said it was due to a WORN part. This is incorrect! Nowhere in the diagnostic report from bmw did it say the damage was done by a worn! The report states it was caused by a broken part! Nobody from BMW told TAP that the cause was a worn part. Actually, Mr. ** the service tech at BMW, told them several times after we received the denial that it was a BROKEN part. This claim is well with in my agreement with TAP!

TAP never sent the promise Inspector. Nor did TAP send me by either email or a phone call the decision of the denial. To this day I still do not have a in writing explanation of the denial. I have tried on several occasions to contact Jason ** at TAP. Jason refused to return my phone calls and finally he responded to one of my emails stating that this had been turned over to a claim department. I called claims department again and then they turned the case over to a supervisor. The supervisor said he will reopen the claim and get back to me in a couple of days. It’s been over a week now and still have not heard anything from TAP. I called Jason once again and emailed him to ask what the supervisors name was. No response from Jason.

Jason and TAP seem to be eager to take your money and answer all your phone calls at the sales point. But when it comes to a claim, it’s a ghost town. In my book this is called a SCAM. I reviewed their Better Business Bureau reviews and there seems to be a lot of other people being taken by the same company. They leave me no other choice but to file and take them to court. Now I have my car sitting at the BMW service department. I cannot drive the car and have a chance to cause further damage. So TAP does not care about your welfare, your car, or any hardship this causes you. TAP will completely ignore you in hopes that you will go away. The way this is being handle seems fraudulent!

They have forced me now to hire an attorney. My attorney has written two emails to TAP on 10-23-23 and 10-25-23. They have refused to respond. My attorney called Jason **, was told that the claim is still under a review. The review was supposed to have taken 48 hrs. It has been over a week. Review opened on 10-17-23 and todays date is 10-27-23 with no response.

I have made every attempt to have a resolution to my claim and they have not responded. My attorney has written an email to given them until 10-27-23 to give us an answer on my claim. The date has come and still no response. I also called TAP at 8:15 am on 10-27-23 and left a message with the answering service. Now I am forced to write reviews an file a law suite against TAP. There seem to be a large amount of complaints with the BBB about the practices of Total Auto Protect. A lot of people money being taken with no services being provided when a claim is filed. I am also filing complaint letters with the BBB, post master general, Delaware States Attorney General’s office and the Delaware Consumer Protection Agency.

I was scammed lied on, people almost lost their job at the dealership dealing with this company. My advice is to find an extended warranty company that actually repair your car. Not one that llc registered in Delaware, big red flag when they breach their contract if you ever get one. I had to call in 5 times but long story short, you can’t go after the owner if you sue just this company. I’m sure they will file bankruptcy and you're out of thousands of dollars.

This company reviews are fake, once they get your money they never have no intentions on repairing your car… Only 2 people works at this company so that speaks value and the fact that they been in business this long and has yet to grow especially if they offering this five star service. Please don’t waste your time or money, you stand a better chance with CarShield lol.

I purchased my car 3 months ago, got an inspection done at the Maserati shop. I paid cash money for this car so there no way I’m buying a lemon. The only thing was wrong with my car was the steering wheel in which I got it fixed before purchasing the policy. I attached the inspection report to prove I had no preexisting damages. The air compressor went out on this car, they deny the claim and came up with this big lie about the dealership told them this and that but once I got them both on the phone together the story changed, this poor man almost lost his job. These people are con artists that work under different entities so follow your gut feelings. Go to the dealership service department and asked them to recommend a company.

Their comprehensive contract does not cover over 200 items. You must read this before you purchase it. I needed a module software program update and it was not covered. In small print under "Comprehensive -What Is Not Covered" I found it listed in small print along with a list of many other items. Had I read this I would not have purchased it. The contract was for 7 years or 90000 miles. I only have 30000 miles on this car and this was my first claim which they denied. No one has time to read the entire contract so they hide the exclusions on page 2 of 5 in small print.

I was interested in an extended policy for my Honda F6B motorcycle. I spoke with an agent, Louis, who appeared very helpful, but requested I pay in full (1,775.00) before seeing a contract (to lock in the special price). I explained that I am leery of pre-paying, before I see EXACTLY what the policy will cover. He referred me to the online brochure, which basically the drive train, and some additional parts would be fully covered, and gives me his direct phone number, as he will be my "personal agent".

So like a dummy, I pay, and approx 2 days later, a contract shows up, outlining the components of an automobile, with automatic transmission (the motorcycle has a standard shift trans). Several calls to him, now more difficult to reach, and 2 more contracts, exactly the same as the first appear. Totally frustrated now, I call the main number and speak with John, who introduces himself as a Senior Account Agent, and he apologizes, and explains how Louis is relatively new, and that he, himself, will be taking over my account. He also promises a proper motorcycle contract will be sent out by next day.

A week goes by, nothing, persistent phone calls go unanswered, e-mails go ignored. At his point, all I want is my money back. With no response from the company, I was forced to go thru my bank debit account, and have VISA return my money, which they did. I since found another policy, that offered more coverage in parts/components, with no mileage cap, for $250 less. There are better policies out there - keep looking.

Please if you are in search of a real, valid, insurance company KEEP LOOKING!!! They denied the only claim I ever made without a reason whatsoever, arguing back and forth. Even my mechanic was in complete shock. And making up excuses to get away with it. $5,000 policy and they didn't even cover a legitimate compressor replacement.

Updated on 12/05/2022: I tried to reach and after multiple emails and phone message. They returned my call to tell me the same reply as before. Now they are saying, "We can pay you courtesy partial amount but claim is denied." I cannot understand. I am seeking others to help on this matter.

Original Review: I already spoke to their representative twice. I paid thousands of dollars to buy ext warranty for my Panamera turbo. Unfortunately found two repairs requested by my dealership service center. I am having hard time dealing with the representatives from this company. They don't have any background or knowledge on the repair, use keyword from repair description and look up policy document to deny claims. Last time they agreed to one repair now when repair center called again they denied it again. I am totally stressed and what is the point of buying warranty, paying lot of amount. So far there are no valid reason for denial. All repairs are covered by their policy document but still denied. Trying to contact them again and also trying Illinois consumer protection agency if they can help as well.
